It began with a sparrow.
A small, still sparrow at the base of a Rose of Sharon tree, in a concrete corner of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I was a boy. I carried it up three flights of stairs and begged my mother to make it well. She couldn't. But something woke up in me that day, and it set the course for the next fifty years of my life.
Off the Leash is the book I always wanted to write. It is a collection of true stories from a lifetime of caring for animals and the families who love them. Some will make you laugh. A few may bring a tear. All of them come from real moments, inside the exam room and out in the world, where I learned that healing an animal almost always means caring for the people who love it too.
Inside you will find the sparrow that started everything, the canaries my father loved, Tommy the Toad and the boy who carried him in, and dozens of stories from more than fifty years of practice. Underneath the stories is a simple belief I have carried my whole career: the small acts of attention we give our pets are love in action, and they protect the bond we share for years to come.
